Saturday exploring more of Virginia wine country

Like I mentioned yesterday, my plans for an afternoon spent apple picking was a bit of a bust. Thankfully, Keith wanted to make the most of the hour and half drive out of the city deeper in to Virginia. The majority of Saturday afternoon was spent sampling more wines of Virginia.

Our little adventure took us to four wineries and vineyards - Philip Carter Winery,  Winding Road Cellars, Hume Vineyards, and Rappahannock Cellars.

After completing the tasting the best thing at Philip Carter Winery, the best glass we tasted was the sangria. The space was beautiful and if the wine was better I would have been interested in drinking a bottle and playing some lawn games.

Winding Road Cellars is a small operation with a charming wine maker. I find I like the white wines coming out of Virginia much more than the reds as was the case at Winding Road Cellars. We left with a bottle of Chardonnay. Their Chardonnay was nicely balanced and I could see it being a lovely table white should it ever become more readily available. I wanted to like the reds, but found them all to taste a  bit like musty mushrooms. Way too earthy for my likes.

Further down the road, we ended up at Hume Vineyards where I again struggled to find a wine I really enjoyed. That is until the final one we tasted - their 2011 Vendange Tardive. Unlike most desert wines, this one had a light mouth feel, which makes me think we'll serve it as an aperitif with some good sharp cheeses.

The final stop of the afternoon was Rappanahannock Cellars and by far the best of the four. We left with not only two bottles of wine - the 2012 Viognier and the 2011 Meritage. The Viognier is crisp with a wonderful apricot finish. The Meritage is well-rounded with a soft earthy finish. In addition to wines, they offer Greek olive oils. Had we not ordered their sampler of warm bread and olive oil we would have missed out on the heavenly truffle-infused oil.

P.S. This is our third adventure exploring Virginia wine country. You can find one here and two here. I'm thinking my favorite vineyards are located closer to Charlottesville.

Saturday afternoon at the apple orchard

I never imagined writing these words, but sometime the inevitable happens and they must be said. Keith was right.

We spent Saturday afternoon at Stribling Orchard in Virginia for what I thought would be an adventure filled afternoon spent picking beautiful, red and golden apples. I wanted to be taken back to those childhood memories of picking apples with my sister and grandpa. The sweet crisp taste filled my mouth as we pulled up to the orchard.

I'm not sure if we missed the window or we didn't walk deep enough into the orchard, but we managed to pick a peck in less than half an hour. And who knew a peck or a small bag would cost $15? The really good looking apples had already been picked and were available in the bins at the general store. Regardless, it was a lesson learned every now and then Keith knows what he's talking about. And that didn't mean we did't enjoy picking our small bag's worth of apples.

Have you been apple picking? If so, should we have went our earlier in the season? Would you do it again? I'm still in the love with the idea.

Saturday morning at a lavender farm

When I first learned of a lavender farm about an hour outside of Washington, DC in Virginia, I ran the idea past Keith as being a nice Saturday adventure. His immediate response was "Andrea and Jaime aren't free?"

Taking the hint, I took the idea to the ladies. Thankfully, they were up for a little road trip into the Virginia countryside. It was a pleasant morning filled with the wonderful scent of lavender and a French inspired brunch of buttery croissants and mimosas.

There was talk of taking our next adventure north to explore Gettysburg on horse back. Again I suggested the idea to Keith so he could have first refusal. Again he suggested that be a ladies day out. I have no idea where his sense of adventure went.

Exploring Virginia Wineries

We managed to escape the District for a few days over the weekend to spend time doting our friends handsome new lil' man and their good looking toddler on Saturday, but not before making time for ourselves on Friday. After enjoying our last Virginia vineyard visits, we decided to explore a few more.

If you get up before 10:30 am on a day off, you should be rewarded with McDonald's breakfast. Or at least that's how we operate. Seriously, who doesn't enjoy McDonald's breakfast. Combine that with sport talk radio and that's how the morning got underway as we headed towards Charlottesville.

After battling a more traffic than expected, we made our way to Blenheim Vineyards. I was pleasantly surprised by how many of their wines we enjoyed. They are tucked away, but are well worth the journey to seek them out. We brought home a bottle of their 2011 Chardonnay, although it was a tough choice between that and their Viognier.  And because I enjoy reds so much more, we also went with a bottle of the 2011 Cabernet Franc that I think will be awesome with some grilled pork chops.

On our way out to Blenheim, we went past Trump Vineyards and circled back to check them out. But after finding Jersey plopped down in Virginia, we quickly backed out the door to make our way towards Charlottesville. As we made our way, there we came past Jefferson Vineyards and figured why not?

Lesson learned, I would suggest driving right on past. The property is gorgeous, but the wine is not so good. They feature 11 wines in their tasting and only one was what we considered a solid table wine. Rather than sample all of them, I would simply recommend purchasing a glass of their 2010 Petit Verdot to enjoy on their patio with this as your view.

There wasn't enough time to make our way to my complete list, so it looks like there might be another trip in our future. Don't worry, I didn't force Keith to give up whiskey for the weekend. We had an awesome dinner of comfort food at the Whiskey Jar on the mall in Charlottesville. If this spot was in DC, it would be a safe bet that it would become a regular place for us.

Aside from a sunburn, it was a great weekend seeing friends and leaving the stress of the District behind. Are there any wineries you would recommend visiting? We seem to be on quite a roll at the moment.

Virginia Day Trip

Just when I thought we couldn't top last Saturday, I think we did this past weekend.

Since learning Catoctin Creek Distilling Company offered a bottling workshop, Keith and I were convinced this would be something we needed to check out.  Yes, Keith ventured out there two Saturdays in a row. And trust me when I say I don't think he minded at all.

The workshop started with signing labels with any personal message. So if you see any of their Watershed Gin referencing the Mavs or asking if you "Got tonic," then you're quite lucky to have acquired a bottle we labeled.

There were several stations that allowed you to actually bottle, insert the cork, or seal up the bottles before they were handed off for labeling and then packing. I'd estimate that at least half the group simply stayed put with the labeling like Keith and me. The work was followed up by a tasting and pizza as a thank you for helping them bottle about 2,000 bottles of their gin.

Rather than stick around for the pizza, we slipped out and ventured over to Leesburg for lunch. We both love French food and with Saturday being Bastille Day it was a given we were going to properly celebrate. I've learned to let Keith's sense of adventure be our guide because lunch was simple but phenomenal at the little Eiffel Tower Cafe.

Keith enjoyed plump moules and I had an unexpectedly light shrimp salad free of any mayonnaise Deviating a bit from the usual drink selections we shared a bottle of rose' wine and,  of course, had to finish off with desert. Desert was also delicious. I'm still craving that light lemon sponge cake with fresh berries.

It's not often that venture outside of the Beltway, or even the District for that matter, that we had to make the most of the trip. I have wanted to explore the Virginia wineries and Keith was open to the idea. We visited two that were near our closet location. One was a solid winery and one was a bit off to say the least. I'd highly recommend checking out the North Gate Vineyard. I found several of their wines to be quite enjoyable and was disappointed to learn they haven't made their way into the Whole Foods in DC yet. There was something romantic about their vineyard...the haze from the earlier rain, the vines, and just being out with my handsome husband.

The second winery was the Notavia Vineyard. This place just started on a sour note for us. You don't tell us that you knew nothing about wine when you started and that you purchased the land on a whim. That definitely didn't impress us. Secondly, this vineyard's unique selling point is their pairing the wine with music over food. Didn't really work for me. It must have worked on Keith because he purchased the bottle that paired with the Dropkick Murphys. For those not familiar with the band, let me introduce you.

Don't worry, if you hadn't heard of them before then. We had to find them online while driving away from the vineyard. It was almost decided to head on over to Charleston, WV for the casino, but reason stepped in and we headed back to the District.

Are there any vineyards in Virginia that you recommend? Or maybe there's a distillery near by you would suggest instead? Hopefully, you're weekend was awesome too!
