Kentucky Derby Museum at Churchill Downs

Since taking the time to seriously considering the items on my bucket list, attending the Kentucky Derby has always been present. While Keith was off tasting more bourbon, I took the opportunity to venture over to Louisville and explore the Kentucky Derby Museum along with Churchill Downs.

The grounds were buzzing as preparation was underway for festivities this week leading up to Saturday's big event. Taking in the museum and walking down the tunnel to the track only confirmed my desire to make it out for official race soon.

What's on your bucket list? Have you attended the Kentucky Derby or other Triple Crown Race?

Tour of Buffalo Trace Distillery

I joined Keith on his yearly pilgrimage to bourbon country, aka Kentucky, this year. Bourbon country sure is gorgeous. Keith tried to explain how pretty Buffalo Trace was last year, but I didn't really believe him. I guess I owe him an apology because it might be the most scenic of all the distilleries we've visited.

We were fortunate enough to go on a special "best of" Buffalo Trace tour. Their operations are pretty impressive compared to the other distillery tours like Marker's Mark and Woodford Reserve. Currently, Buffalo Trace has over 15 labels all of which are produced at their Frankfort, Kentucky location.* I won't bore you with the step by step details, but here are some of the highlights.

There was some concern that this might be a one and done and I wouldn't want to join Keith on the yearly trip. I don't foresee that being the case. However, I'm not sure I need to visit the distilleries each year. I'd much prefer to simply drink the end result without seeing how it's made.

* This does not include their Bowman operations in Virginia.

New York City in Photos - Part II

As promised, I wanted to share a few more photos from our anniversary trip to New York last week. Considering another polar vortex had hit the city during our visit, we took in more museums than expected. I fear Keith might have already reached his limit for art exhibits for 2014.

We visited two of the essentials - the Met and MoMA, but we also took in the Morgan Library and Museum.  The Morgan Library began as the private library of financier Pierpont Morgan, the father of J.P. Morgan. It was one of those delightful discoveries all because we wanted to stay inside as much as possible.

New York City in Photos - Part I

As the snow started to fall in New York, Keith and I were hustling to Penn Station for our return back to the District on Saturday. We agreed that we'll plan our future anniversary trips for some place south, where we won't be faced with polar vortexes.

I am embarrassed to admit that this trip was my first time visiting the city. Despite the bone chilling temperatures, it was a memorable trip filled with some great adventures and wonderful meals.

Here are a few photos I managed to take without removing my gloves.

3rd Anniversary

Via The Emerics
Three years ago Keith and I said "I do" in Las Vegas. We didn't take a honeymoon right after our ceremony. Instead, we've taken on a better tradition - each year for our anniversary we take a little vacation. This year we're in New York City. If only we had the foresight to know there would be another polar vortex during our visit. Regardless, I'm super excited and cannot wait to share photos with you when we return.

Weekend in Kansas & The Eisenhower Museum

We flew back to Kansas this past weekend to help my mom celebrate her 60th birthday. During a little downtime, I managed to share a piece of Kansas history with Keith by making the drive over to Abilene for an afternoon exploring the Eisenhower museum.

You all know of my love for presidential libraries. Despite having visited this one many times, I still enjoy walking through and learning a new tidbit or two. Unlike most other presidential libraries, the Eisenhower library and museum is more like a campus with multiple buildings, including his childhood home as well as chapel including his final resting place.

We couldn't have asked for more gorgeous weather. Can you believe the blue of the sky? And of course, what trip to Kansas would be complete without a stop at Arthur Bryant's before the airport? I might just take Keith to one of the other barbecue joints in Kansas City on the next trip...maybe.

It was good to see family and celebrate a milestone birthday with my mom, but it sure does feel good to be back in DC with Sammy. There's just something about your own bed.

Saturday morning at a lavender farm

When I first learned of a lavender farm about an hour outside of Washington, DC in Virginia, I ran the idea past Keith as being a nice Saturday adventure. His immediate response was "Andrea and Jaime aren't free?"

Taking the hint, I took the idea to the ladies. Thankfully, they were up for a little road trip into the Virginia countryside. It was a pleasant morning filled with the wonderful scent of lavender and a French inspired brunch of buttery croissants and mimosas.

There was talk of taking our next adventure north to explore Gettysburg on horse back. Again I suggested the idea to Keith so he could have first refusal. Again he suggested that be a ladies day out. I have no idea where his sense of adventure went.

Weekend Away: Carter Library and Museum in Atlanta

While Keith was off running around Kentucky, I decided to head down south as well to Atlanta for a little time with my sister. Aside from spending a little QT with her, the highlight had to be the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum.

Yes, I'm a bit of a nerd. I have a goal of visiting each presidential library, even those presidents I whose politics I may not agree with. Since she moved to Atlanta five years ago, visiting the Carter's has been on the list. Realizing she couldn't avoid it any longer, she finally decided this last trip would be the one.

I was familiar with his policies and accomplishments in office, but what was most interesting was everything he's achieved since. Here's a few of the photos I was able to take of the highlights.

Now to work on Keith so we can make our way to Little Rock for President Clinton's. Do you have any where you want to visit in your lifetime?

Kentucky Barrel Pickin'

I just got back from visiting Kentucky to pick some bourbon barrels for a group of like-minded bourbon aficionados. I had an amazing time and I wanted to share some pictures of the experience.

Whiskey & BBQ

Whiskey and BBQ...two of our favorite things. On Friday, we flew out to Kansas City and braced ourselves for a 4.5 hour drive to Branson, Missouri for a family wedding. Before we even considered starting the over four hour drive, we stopped at Arthur Bryant's for some authentic Kansas City BBQ.

Considering Keith grew up in Texas, there was some skepticism on his part as to whether Arthur Bryant's would deliver. But when I saw his tweet describing, "Arthur Bryant's was a revelation." I knew I wouldn't have to hear about the virtues of Texas for the drive ahead. We contemplated grabbing another sandwich for the flight home on Sunday, but instead decided to save the next visit for when we return in September.

The second highlight was Saturday afternoon. I want to go on record as being the best wife. When researching how we could spend the time before the wedding, I figured there had to be some kind of micro distillery in the area. Lucky for us there was...the Copper Run Distillery about a half hour outside of Branson.

They produce a whiskey using 80% corn and 20% wheat and a moonshine as well as a rum aged three years. I hope they get to a point where they can age the whiskey longer than seven months because there is potential. It's a full whiskey with a sweet carmel finish. The rum on the other hand reminded me of vanilla extract. They also have a bar upstairs that serves some delightful cocktails using their spirits. Had we not had to slip away for the wedding, I think Keith and I would have spent hours there. The sexy thyme cocktail was quite delightful.

Is there anything you seek out when traveling?

Viva Las Vegas

Keith and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary by taking an early flight to Las Vegas on Friday. We stayed at the MGM Grand (where we said "I do"), ate some great meals, lost a little money, introduced Keith to Cirque du Soleil, watched some jelly fish, explored the world, and just spent time away from the hustle and bustle of Washington, DC.

It was rough getting up this morning and realizing it was back to the daily grind. To help get us through this week and many more, we're already thinking about our next trip. Thoughts on California wine country? I guess we have a thing for heading west.
