DIY Bedroom Art

As I mentioned, Sandy helped me focus on a few things I have wanted to accomplish around the house. I purchased this large canvas almost six months ago.

I wanted a large piece of statement art to hang over the that gorgeous bed we purchased a while back. What do you think? I wasn't in love with it at first, but it is growing on me once I decided to live with it for a bit.

I'm slowly making progress on the bedroom even though we've lived in our current apartment for almost two years. Up next is a bench for the foot of the bed. There may also be new curtains in the future as well.

Have you created any masterpieces for your home?

Good-bye Sandy

Via
We had the pleasure of meeting Sandy over the weekend. You may have heard a bit about her. When I moved to the District, I never imagined I would live to tell you about not one but two hurricanes. Of these two, it appears Irene last year was a bit worse. Although, Keith and I agreed we couldn't imagine staying home through something like Katrina.

This storm was quite a bit of rain, but not downpours. The rain was steady with some fierce gusts of wind every once in a while. Ultimately, we had a nice little break from life. We had comforting lazy breakfasts.

I was able to get a few projects around the house knocked out. It feels pretty good to get that knocked off the to-do list.

When we weren't eating or tinkering around the apartment, we were cuddled up with this little purr baby catching up on TV, watching movies, or reading.

We were very fortunate and probably a little spoiled considering we never lost power, didn't have to head into work, and had plenty of groceries. Our thoughts are with all of those who not as lucky.

Homemade is better

Around 4 o'clock this afternoon all I could think about was a slab of cake with chocolate frosting. Considering I had planned to stop by the gym after work, I bargained that if I baked the cake from scratch it would some how work itself out. And that is probably why there are pants in my closet that don't fit. Nothing to do with metabolism.

Well, cake baked and enjoyed. Now if only I had poured myself a glass of milk.

Why, hello kitchen.

I think it's safe to say fall has finally made it's way to the nation's capitol. And it is glorious...the leaves are slowly starting to change, there's a chill in the air, and football has returned with the real refs. Can you tell this is my favorite time of year?

I don't know what it is about this weather, but I want to spend serious time reconnecting with my kitchen. After the extreme heat and humidity, I guess having a small galley kitchen with a window that doesn't open can do that to a girl. Tonight I skipped the gym to rush home and get a stew simmering on the stove and a pie baking in the oven.

In addition to rekindling the romance with my kitchen, I also like to spend a little quality time with my growing collection of cookbooks. Sometimes there's inspiration in those books and others I like to just eat with my eyes especially when it's one of those wonderfully photographed ones.

If I had the time and the budget for all of the ingredients, I would take a long sabbatical from the office and just cook or perhaps bake my way through each one. Even more I cannot wait for the day when I can find my cookbook collection a proper home within my kitchen.

Do you have any cookbooks you recommend? I think I may be adding Fried and Champagne to the collection soon.

Just business as usual

I wish I could share stories about our great adventures from the past week and explain that’s why we’ve been absent. Sadly, that’s not it. This past week has been another hot one that’s left us just trying to stay cool. I guess you could say we’re still taking our cues from Sammy.

It hasn’t been terrible. We’ve managed to enjoy lots of fresh salsa made with farmers’ market tomatoes. Who knew three large tomatoes would equal a mixing bowl worth of salsa? I was down with that because it was awesome.

All that salsa left us thirsty so there were a few cold ones. And to say I was super excited would be an understatement when I found Boulevard Brewery’s unfiltered wheat out here. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve wanted one of those beers since I moved out here eight years ago. Thinking we might have to go back this weekend with hopes of snagging another six-pack.

One of the best wedding gifts we received was the Super Deluxe edition of Scrabble from my sister. I cannot begin to tell you how many rounds have been played. When Keith and I first started dating there were many nights playing Monopoly since that was one of the few board games we had, so I’m relieved the collection has expanded.

This weekend we plan to continue this pattern of lazy. I’m planning to put another wedding gift to use and make ice cream. And maybe we’ll mix it up a bit and switch up the board game or perhaps I’ll tackle the pile of books on the nightstand since I’ve made several new acquisitions.

Do you have any big plans? Or is the heat just getting to you too?

July 4 in the AC

The Fourth of July is by far my favorite holiday of the year. Apparently, I have a hidden pyromaniac just waiting to burst out. Unfortunately that has been repressed after moving to Washington, DC. At least, we call the nation’s capital home and are never short on things to occupy the time.

The heat wave mentioned on my prior occasions seems to be around for the remainder of the summer. Talk about putting a damper on most plans. Somehow we have found a way to power through and enjoy ourselves. Yesterday we hosted friends for grilled burgers and hot dogs along with fresh salads and watermelon. And because life is short there were Rice Krispy treats, blueberry crumble, and of course a little bourbon thrown in for good measure.

It was sweltering hot so we passed on the National’s ballgame, the neighborhood parade, and even the fireworks on the Mall. Instead we hunkered down with board games – you know they’re that much better when you have a group – and settled in on the sofa in the AC for the show.

Trust me. I never thought the day would come where I would forgo the Mall and the spectacular show. But when it was still 95 degrees at 9 pm, I learned there is a moment. Here’s to hoping next year is much more bearable. I’m not asking much maybe 89 degrees at 9 pm.

Hope you had a fun and safe July 4!

Too hot to do much else

Rumor has it that Washington, DC had record highs yesterday. I’m not sure if that’s the case, but it was ridiculously hot and humid in our nation’s capital.  So much so that we took the lead from Sammy.

Instead of going out to watch Goonies at one of the parks close by as planned months ago, we stayed in and watched a very disappointing Thunder-Heat game. Fingers crossed that the weather gives us a break this weekend. Otherwise, it will be another weekend hidden away with a book and cold beverage.

Do you have any good weekend plans? I’d love to hear about something in air conditioning.

Book Review: The Hunger Games

I have a confession to make and it may come as a shock to some of you. I read all three books commonly known as The Hunger Games trilogy by Suzanne Collins. In fact, I essentially devoured them in 72 hours.

For those that don’t know much about the books, the story takes place following the destruction of North America as we know it. The area now consists of 12 districts controlled by The Capitol and one outlying district that is essentially left alone. For the most part, each district is poor and ruled by an iron fist. As punishment for rebellions several generations earlier, one boy and one girl from each of the remaining districts is forced to participate in the “Hunger Games” aka a fight to the death where there can only be one victor. The Hunger Games are to serve as a deterrent to those thinking about rebelling and for the Capitol’s entertainment.

Honestly, I didn’t know that when I started reading, which is probably a good thing. Had I started with that much detail I probably never would have picked them up. If I ruined it for anyone else, I apologize.

Given the audience is young adults, the books are a quick and easy read. Occasionally, you’ll find the plot has been simplified a bit too much. However, you will be entertained. Several friends described the first book as the best and leaving you anxious for the second. The second book started slowly, but kept your interest. By the third book, I was over it. The story was starting to unravel and the writing was not as strong as the first book. Not to mention, I found the ending as an abrupt stop.

With all of that said, if you want a quick easy read for the beach or a rainy weekend, these books are a great option. You’ll be entertained and won’t have to think too hard.

Apollo’s Angels has been on my nightstand for far too long, so I hope to finish that one up soon and report back. What book or books are you reading?

Refreshed

Keith and I really took advantage of the three-day weekend. We may have almost taken advantage of it a little too much. It was quite the struggle for both of us to get out of bed.

The weekend involved a little work. Our new blue bed is assembled (thank you, Keith!) and in place with new bedding following an IKEA trip. I’ve decided to share photos once the entire room is complete. Thought I’d go for the dramatic reveal.

We spent quality time with dear friends and their new little man. Who by the way is adorable. Don’t believe me? Check for yourself.

The rest of the time was devoted to becoming reacquainted with our couch and bed. We did absolutely nothing and it was wonderful. The biggest accomplish was making this for breakfast a couple of days.

Did you do anything good with your bonus day?

Just bleh

Since we returned from Georgia, I have felt right down crummy. Within an hour of being home, my eyes became all red and puffy. This wasn’t something cucumbers could fix. I figured this was just part of returning home and dealing with the ridiculous pollen counts.

The remainder of the week has been spent accepting I caught a nasty cold. Wednesday was the worst of it. Thankfully, Keith was there to help take care of me. It’s just miserable being sick when you’re all alone.

As much as I want to tell you about exotic travel plans, the long three-day weekend is devoted to sleeping and basically staying close to home. At most, I plan to venture out to IKEA and Target.

Please tell me your plans are better.

Book Review: The Boy in the Moon

At any given point, you’ll find at least 3 books on my nightstand – more if you count all the books I’ve downloaded to my Kindle, but have yet to read. And if you check out Keith’s side of the bed there is often that many books on his along with the New Yorker and whatever magazine he’s reading at the moment. And this isn’t counting the books he manages to stash around the apartment. He assures me there is a system to his madness, although I can’t always be sure.

The latest book I finished was The Boy in the Moon: A Father’s Journey to Understand his Extraordinary Son by Ian Brown. Ian shares his story about his son, Walker, who has an incredibly rare genetic condition called Cardiofaciocutaneous (CFC) syndrome. Only one in about 300 people worldwide is diagnosed. Walker is unable to speak or effectively communicate, constantly tries to harm himself, and will need constant care for the rest of his life.

I have mixed feelings in recommending this book. Ian is honest and doesn’t attempt to cast Walker as an angel shared with him to teach a larger lesson. He shares his doubts and insecurities with brutal honesty. All of this is done in a chronological progression, taking you through the family’s journey. However, by the middle of the book, Ian shifts to more of a rambling research report with awkward attempts to tie it back to Walker and the family. I often found myself skimming over chapters to get back to back to the personal story.

Regardless, it was a moving story and nothing like the books I typically pick up so it was worth the deviation off my usual path. Do you have a type of book you tend to gravitate towards or do you read a variety of genres?

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

Back in December, I purchased a blank canvas and some acrylic paints. I was going to create a masterpiece to bring a little color and life to our apartment. Something about best intentions and life…you know how that goes.

That canvas sat untouched in our bedroom out of sight for almost six months. There were times I was going to pull it out and creatively express myself, but I just never followed through. Then when I was ready, I decided to take part in a Living Social Sippin’ and Paintin’ deal with Lynn. To say that painting didn’t turn out as planned would be an understatement. Only for your amusement do I share this picture with you.

For the life of me, I have no idea why Keith likes it or so he claims. I think he’s just being a good husband when he says that. Because lets be honest, it’s no Monet. (Not that the next one is, but I like it more.)

Moving on to the other night. I decided to give painting another go of it. I had been looking at various pieces of work on Etsy, but every piece I showed Keith for feedback was met with “You could do that and for less.” Finally, I got the hint. He didn’t want to invest in art so I needed to get off my bum. I now share my latest work with you.

I was in love with it at first, but now after staring at it a bit more in the hallway I’m not so sure. Regardless, it does bring some color to the space and helps to cover up the hideous gray breaker box. This more artist photo makes it look even better, so I'm liking it again.

Do you have a hobby that you enjoy? Is it something you’re really good at or simply enjoy?

Head Start on the Weekend

Gone are the Thursday nights where we get a jump start on the weekend by going out on the town. We get a jump start still, just not what it once was. Keith and I have had exhausting weeks at work...but for different reasons. He's crazy busy. And well, I'm waiting for the busy rush to start that I keep hearing so much talk about.

Regardless, I was more than happy to finally see this after walking home from the metro. Don't ask me why, but I love this blue door. I had to use my persuasive speaking skills in order to get the handy man to paint the new door this blue. As you can see, mission accomplished.

Thursdays are exciting for me. Keith would describe me like a little girl on Christmas morning as I unpack my bimonthly box of fruits and vegetables. I can't help but get so excited over fresh from the farm products.  Let me give a shout to Washington's Green Grocer for making my life so much easier. Stay tuned...I plan to share some of my creations using these beauties.

The rest of the evening was spent with delivery pizza, pinning my little heart out, and bonding with my little sidekick, Sammy. Trust me; you'll be hearing more about her too. She's our little purr baby.

Yep, I think we've made a nice head start on the weekend. So, tell me....what do you have planned?
