The Man Cave, AKA the Bourbon Bunker

Since moving into our apartment, we have struggled with finding the best use for our second bedroom. It is not quite big enough for a true guest room, so we had a desk in there for a while to use as a home office. Needless to say we still set up shop at the dining table.

I finally decided that Keith deserved one room that was just for him. My original goal was to have a room where he could spend time with a good book and a dram. Well, the new plan has only half worked. The room came together as I had envisioned. However, rather than a place to cozy up with a book, it's become a very stylish storage room for the bourbon.

Organizing the bunker became all the more crucial when I learned about the new bottles from Smooth Ambler that would need a home. I'm coming to terms with the fact that all three book cases will soon house nothing but bourbon. Thankfully, I have time to strategize about a new home for our library.

Wine cellars are so last year. Bourbon bunkers are all the rage these days. Wait, no? Just my house?

Living Room Refresh

After seeing various gallery walls on Pinterest, I was convinced we needed one in our home. Once I reviewed the various pins, I noticed I gravitated towards galleries in the hallway and surrounding the television. With family coming to town for Thanksgiving, I had to stop thinking about and begin putting things on the wall.

I started by laying everything out on the floor in various positions, but ultimately I just started hanging things. I should have went the easier route from the beginning because having everything on the floor just led me to over think everything. I'm hoping to slowly add more items, but this is a good start. Since the camera was already out, I figured I would capture a few other photos of our main living space. If only I had a better eye or maybe photoshop to enhance them a bit.

DIY Bedroom Art - Part II

As you may recall, I tried let my inter artist out. Well the more I looked at that painting above the bed, the more I just didn't like it.

So that painting became this:

I'll be the first to admit taking an iPhone photo without the flash or better lighting wasn't the best approach, but you get the idea. I painted the canvas white and then simply did a quick pass writing out the words. I then went over it a couple of times with paint really loaded up on the brush and a few strokes with a wet brush to get a varied affect.

This project has lead me to completely turn the bedroom upside down. I have plans to move this on a different wall. I ordered various fabric samples with plans for new curtains, a toss pillow or two, and a few art projects. I even purchased a new arm chair.

Now I'm thinking I might need to take few days off work and have a staycation knocking out the new to-do list I created for myself. Do you ever bring something into your home to find it didn't work like you thought it would? Please tell me it's not just me.

Ready for guests

I spruced up the back porch two Sundays ago and just got around to taking pictures yesterday. Although, in my defense, the weather here in the District has not be favorable. Thankfully, we have a break from the rain. But now I'm worried because we have chilly nights ahead of us. Let's just hope these beauties were for nothing.

As you can see, the new additions have been Sammy approved. She's even suggesting guests. But for now the bigger challenge is to keep everything living and thriving.

It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas

You may find this hard to believe, but we've had our Christmas tree up for several weeks now. We got a jump start on the holiday spirit when we took my family to Ford's Theatre for A Christmas Carol.  After seeing them off on Saturday morning, we spent that Sunday decking the halls. Of course, Sammy was there to supervise everything.

She wants to ensure people receive a proper seasonal greeting the moment they come into our apartment. As a thank you for her help, and because she's such a part of the family, we had to ensure she has a stocking hanging up too.

I'm hoping I can convince Keith that we should go all out and expand beyond the Charlie Brown tree next year, but it's not looking good. He's grown quite attached to this little guy. I just feel like our tiny tree is overwhelmed by the gifts. I wanted something fresh, which explains this impulse purchase from Whole Foods. Do you ever get sucked into those purchases too? No, just me.

For now, this rosemary tree will have to do as my fresh Christmas tree. It's pretty cute there on our buffet keeping the booze company. I'm fighting the desire to decorate even more, but then I'm reminded that I'll have to take it all down and find a place to keep it until next year. I guess it's a good thing work has been consuming so much of my time the past couple of weeks. Can't really start projects when you're too tired.

Did you decorate this year? If so, do you have a fresh Christmas tree?

DIY Bedroom Art

As I mentioned, Sandy helped me focus on a few things I have wanted to accomplish around the house. I purchased this large canvas almost six months ago.

I wanted a large piece of statement art to hang over the that gorgeous bed we purchased a while back. What do you think? I wasn't in love with it at first, but it is growing on me once I decided to live with it for a bit.

I'm slowly making progress on the bedroom even though we've lived in our current apartment for almost two years. Up next is a bench for the foot of the bed. There may also be new curtains in the future as well.

Have you created any masterpieces for your home?

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

Back in December, I purchased a blank canvas and some acrylic paints. I was going to create a masterpiece to bring a little color and life to our apartment. Something about best intentions and life…you know how that goes.

That canvas sat untouched in our bedroom out of sight for almost six months. There were times I was going to pull it out and creatively express myself, but I just never followed through. Then when I was ready, I decided to take part in a Living Social Sippin’ and Paintin’ deal with Lynn. To say that painting didn’t turn out as planned would be an understatement. Only for your amusement do I share this picture with you.

For the life of me, I have no idea why Keith likes it or so he claims. I think he’s just being a good husband when he says that. Because lets be honest, it’s no Monet. (Not that the next one is, but I like it more.)

Moving on to the other night. I decided to give painting another go of it. I had been looking at various pieces of work on Etsy, but every piece I showed Keith for feedback was met with “You could do that and for less.” Finally, I got the hint. He didn’t want to invest in art so I needed to get off my bum. I now share my latest work with you.

I was in love with it at first, but now after staring at it a bit more in the hallway I’m not so sure. Regardless, it does bring some color to the space and helps to cover up the hideous gray breaker box. This more artist photo makes it look even better, so I'm liking it again.

Do you have a hobby that you enjoy? Is it something you’re really good at or simply enjoy?

I just want some zzzzz's

For the last couple of months, Keith and I have been sleeping on an Aerobed air mattress - and you thought we were adults. It’s been placed on top of our platform bed and we’ve gone to great lengths to make it as comfy as possible. There’s a comforter between the mattress and the bed frame to reduce any noise given it's not a real mattress. We have included an egg crate foam topper and an extra thick mattress pad on top. And of course, we obviously have to refill the air supply on a regular basis.

Surprisingly, this was really comfortable for at least the first six weeks or so. But for some reason this past week, it has failed and in a big way. My back aches. Keith complains of still being tired. Enough was enough. I’m happy to report we have finally broken down and ordered a Heavenly Bed from the Westin. To say I’m freaking ecstatic would be an understatement.

Well, since we need a new mattress and have opted for a box spring too, I figured we should just as well go all out. I mean why half-ass something? While poking around on the Joss & Main website, I found the bed. I mean the bed just screamed “Nicole, you have to buy me. I am the answer to your sleeping woes and I’m gorgeous to boot!” Even better, it brings in the blue I wanted without having to paint. (That's a story for another time.)

Pretty convincing, huh? Yep, I ordered this beauty. So, remember that list of items I’m on the hunt for? I guess you could say we went on a little side safari, but when in the name of sleep it’s totally worth it, right?

Ready for a little outdoor R&R

I promised you pictures and at last I have them to share. We finished the back porch this weekend and it feels so good to cross that off my list. It took more trips than Keith would have liked to the neighborhood hardware store. After the organized circus that greeted us there Saturday, I'm not sure I have any more trips there in me, myself.

So without further adieu, here's what the back porch looks like for now.

I might add another plant or two. Perhaps, a hanging plant on the middle post. What do you think? Are we missing anything other than steaks on the grill and a cool drink in our hands?

Head Start on the Weekend

Gone are the Thursday nights where we get a jump start on the weekend by going out on the town. We get a jump start still, just not what it once was. Keith and I have had exhausting weeks at work...but for different reasons. He's crazy busy. And well, I'm waiting for the busy rush to start that I keep hearing so much talk about.

Regardless, I was more than happy to finally see this after walking home from the metro. Don't ask me why, but I love this blue door. I had to use my persuasive speaking skills in order to get the handy man to paint the new door this blue. As you can see, mission accomplished.

Thursdays are exciting for me. Keith would describe me like a little girl on Christmas morning as I unpack my bimonthly box of fruits and vegetables. I can't help but get so excited over fresh from the farm products.  Let me give a shout to Washington's Green Grocer for making my life so much easier. Stay tuned...I plan to share some of my creations using these beauties.

The rest of the evening was spent with delivery pizza, pinning my little heart out, and bonding with my little sidekick, Sammy. Trust me; you'll be hearing more about her too. She's our little purr baby.

Yep, I think we've made a nice head start on the weekend. So, tell me....what do you have planned?

The Thrill of the Hunt

There is something about the thrill of the hunt that just excites me. You know the feeling of adrenaline that kicks in right before you zone in on the target...the excitement of taking your new prize home. Let me tell you it’s a thing of beauty that cannot be argued with.

Now before your imagination goes any further, I’m talking about shopping and finding just the right thing. Sometimes it’s a new pair of shoes. Others, it can be the perfect picture frame to hold that special moment. Or maybe, it’s the ingredients for tonight’s dinner. Regardless, that feeling of conquer is amazing!

Right now, I’m preparing for a big hunt to redo or finish some of the rooms in our apartment. We recently signed on for another year. And dare I say, I see this apartment being home for many more years to come?

Don’t you find a sigh of relief when you realize a place will be home for a little longer? It’s like I can now commence the search for all those items I had put off until I was certain. In case you’re curious, here’s what I need to find through trips to the Goodwill and vintage furniture stores, hours spent combing the Craigslist postings, and ventures to IKEA and Target.

  • Leather chair and ottoman (Yes, specifically leather. Something like this.)
  • Round side table
  • Floor lamp
  • Two bedroom lamps
  • Bench
  • Simple arm chair
  • Coffee table (Haven’t decided on the shape just quite yet.)
This is going to be such fun! Now to convince Keith to join in with enthusiasm. As I start to cement my thoughts, I’ll begin sharing my ideas and see what you think I may be missing.

So, do you enjoy the thrill of the hunt?
