Organizing and Purging - The Cookbook Corner

Every time we would sit down to eat at the dining table, I'd look over at my collection of cookbooks and cooking magazines and grow frustrated. I knew there had to be a better system that looked better. I also knew it was on me to organize them. It wasn't like Sammy was going to take care of it.

Here's a before and after. It's very subtle and I'm probably the only one that can tell the difference. You know? I'm okay with that.

You will notice the random canning jars full of our bourbon experiments have been properly disposed of. The box of glasses have found a new home. And what started as this humongous pile of magazines...

...was condensed down to fit in the right-hand pocket of the yellow folder. I'm sure it was because I had Sammy's assistance.

My cookbooks are not at all in the order I'd like for them to be. I struggled with keeping them organized by size versus type/cuisine grouped together. As you can see, size won out.

In a dream world, I'll have shelves like this...

The cookbook corner was the first of many little projects I have on my list for organizing and just overall tidying up. Maybe the first signs of fall weather are giving me the boost I need to get things in order so we can properly nest for winter. How about you? Any little organizing projects you'd like/need to tackle?

DIY Bedroom Art - Part II

As you may recall, I tried let my inter artist out. Well the more I looked at that painting above the bed, the more I just didn't like it.

So that painting became this:

I'll be the first to admit taking an iPhone photo without the flash or better lighting wasn't the best approach, but you get the idea. I painted the canvas white and then simply did a quick pass writing out the words. I then went over it a couple of times with paint really loaded up on the brush and a few strokes with a wet brush to get a varied affect.

This project has lead me to completely turn the bedroom upside down. I have plans to move this on a different wall. I ordered various fabric samples with plans for new curtains, a toss pillow or two, and a few art projects. I even purchased a new arm chair.

Now I'm thinking I might need to take few days off work and have a staycation knocking out the new to-do list I created for myself. Do you ever bring something into your home to find it didn't work like you thought it would? Please tell me it's not just me.

DIY Bedroom Art

As I mentioned, Sandy helped me focus on a few things I have wanted to accomplish around the house. I purchased this large canvas almost six months ago.

I wanted a large piece of statement art to hang over the that gorgeous bed we purchased a while back. What do you think? I wasn't in love with it at first, but it is growing on me once I decided to live with it for a bit.

I'm slowly making progress on the bedroom even though we've lived in our current apartment for almost two years. Up next is a bench for the foot of the bed. There may also be new curtains in the future as well.

Have you created any masterpieces for your home?

Make your own bitters

As I've learned more about classic cocktails like the sazerac, sidecar,  and old fashioned to name a few, I've wanted to do whatever I can to perfect them when I make them at home. Knowing that fresh, homemade pasta is better than a box, I figured the same had to apply to a bitter.

We've already established I like a good deal, so it should come as no surprise that I couldn't resist the Groupon for a "make your own bitters lesson" at the Georgetown Spice and Tea Exchange.  This store smelled amazing with a wall of such fragrant spices and herbs. I may have came home with a purchase or two.

The class was disappointing for the price, even though it was a deal. I honestly think I would have been better off purchasing a book from Amazon. The instructor was knowledgable, but wasn't very organized or effective at sharing that information. It's really unfortunate because I had high hopes. Instead, I need to find a book or just pay the local liquor store a visit. Suggestions? Do you make your own bitters? Or maybe you have a favorite cocktail you'd recommend? It is Friday, after all.

Refreshed

Keith and I really took advantage of the three-day weekend. We may have almost taken advantage of it a little too much. It was quite the struggle for both of us to get out of bed.

The weekend involved a little work. Our new blue bed is assembled (thank you, Keith!) and in place with new bedding following an IKEA trip. I’ve decided to share photos once the entire room is complete. Thought I’d go for the dramatic reveal.

We spent quality time with dear friends and their new little man. Who by the way is adorable. Don’t believe me? Check for yourself.

The rest of the time was devoted to becoming reacquainted with our couch and bed. We did absolutely nothing and it was wonderful. The biggest accomplish was making this for breakfast a couple of days.

Did you do anything good with your bonus day?

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder

Back in December, I purchased a blank canvas and some acrylic paints. I was going to create a masterpiece to bring a little color and life to our apartment. Something about best intentions and life…you know how that goes.

That canvas sat untouched in our bedroom out of sight for almost six months. There were times I was going to pull it out and creatively express myself, but I just never followed through. Then when I was ready, I decided to take part in a Living Social Sippin’ and Paintin’ deal with Lynn. To say that painting didn’t turn out as planned would be an understatement. Only for your amusement do I share this picture with you.

For the life of me, I have no idea why Keith likes it or so he claims. I think he’s just being a good husband when he says that. Because lets be honest, it’s no Monet. (Not that the next one is, but I like it more.)

Moving on to the other night. I decided to give painting another go of it. I had been looking at various pieces of work on Etsy, but every piece I showed Keith for feedback was met with “You could do that and for less.” Finally, I got the hint. He didn’t want to invest in art so I needed to get off my bum. I now share my latest work with you.

I was in love with it at first, but now after staring at it a bit more in the hallway I’m not so sure. Regardless, it does bring some color to the space and helps to cover up the hideous gray breaker box. This more artist photo makes it look even better, so I'm liking it again.

Do you have a hobby that you enjoy? Is it something you’re really good at or simply enjoy?
