A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

I think it's finally safe to say spring has arrived in the nation's capitol.  Since the weather was simply too gorgeous to spend the day indoors doing laundry on Sunday, I took a walk through the neighborhood. I thought you might like to see a few of the pictures.

If you find yourself on Capitol Hill near Eastern Market, I highly recommend having a meal at Ted's Bulletin. They make homemade pop tarts, boozy milkshakes, an awesome chicken fried steak, and serve breakfast all day. I promise you won't be disappointed.

Golden Arches, No More

I've been waiting for the leaves to change and create a golden arch all fall. It's one of the most beautiful sites to see. On Saturday it finally happened - the arch was a gorgeous yellow. Rather than take the photo right then and there, I decided to tackle the Thanksgiving grocery trip. What a mistake! I was heartbroken when I looked out the window Sunday to find bare trees. Instead, I was greeted with a yellow blanket on the sidewalks and streets. Regardless, still a sight to behold - and one I couldn't help but share.

Fall on Capitol Hill

The calendar may have reported it was fall back in September, but it took most of the month of October to read the memo. The air finally has a crispness to it. The leaves are blazing in all those gorgeous warm colors. And the football season is well underway. It's my favorite time of the year.

You appreciate the beauty of the historic row homes throughout the year when you live on Capitol Hill; they just look that more beautiful during the fall. I like to think of fall as the neighborhood's real time to shine. It's just stunning. The capitol dome even looks a bit more glamorous and you almost forget the trouble shaping up underneath. Almost...

The leaves are falling faster than I would like and December along with the holidays will be in full swing too soon. But yesterday, Keith and I walked around the neighborhood to soak up all the beauty and just enjoy it. Now to just live in the moment more often.

Summer Vacation is Over

Despite not having children heading back to school, it feels like Labor Day weekend brings the official end to summer. Although fall doesn't officially start for a few more weeks, I'm hoping to feel a renewed start when I return to the office tomorrow.

I'm ready to leave the summer behind. Summers at the office for me are filled with various deadlines while everyone else is enjoying time at the beach. I know I sound bitter. Don't worry. Keith and I have agreed that next summer we're going to escape even if it's just for a long weekend. Despite not sneaking out of the city, we managed to fit in a few moments of fun.

We caught a few Nationals games. (Thank you to the office for the great seats!) I took in the War Photography exhibit at the Corcoran Gallery; I highly recommend fitting that in before it leaves at the end of the month. We also ventured over to the northeast side of the District to check out one of the latest DC Breweries - 3 Star Brewing Company. I'm not much a of a beer fan, so I can't give you much. Keith on the other hand cannot stop raving about their IPA. Something about it being well-rounded and full of complex flavors, including apricot. Of course, there were weekends spent baking and time with bourbon. I hope your summer was good to you.

I don't know about you. I'm just eager to welcome cooler weather, spend my weekends watching football, and a break from the nonstop hustle at the office. Do you find a renewal with the change of seasons as well?

Bartholdi Park

While out looking at the cherry blossoms Sunday, we stopped at Bartholdi Park before making our way  up the Hill and ultimately home. This park has always captured my attention with its beautiful fountain in the center and constant rotation of plants and flowers. Ready for some random DC trivia? Bartholdi Park is part of the U.S. Botanic Gardens and is named after the sculptor of the historic fountain in the center.

After reading more about the history of Bartholdi Park, I'm even more enamored with it. During the 1880s, the park was a popular destination for its gas lamps, making it one of the first attractions in the nation's capitol to be brightly illuminated at night.  There are always little pockets of solitude tucked away throughout the park. I only wish it was closer to my office so I could sneak out during the middle of the day for lunch or a quiet break with coffee.

Since I can't escape to one of its quiet benches during the day, we may find ourselves down there with a picnic some weekend soon.

July 4 in the AC

The Fourth of July is by far my favorite holiday of the year. Apparently, I have a hidden pyromaniac just waiting to burst out. Unfortunately that has been repressed after moving to Washington, DC. At least, we call the nation’s capital home and are never short on things to occupy the time.

The heat wave mentioned on my prior occasions seems to be around for the remainder of the summer. Talk about putting a damper on most plans. Somehow we have found a way to power through and enjoy ourselves. Yesterday we hosted friends for grilled burgers and hot dogs along with fresh salads and watermelon. And because life is short there were Rice Krispy treats, blueberry crumble, and of course a little bourbon thrown in for good measure.

It was sweltering hot so we passed on the National’s ballgame, the neighborhood parade, and even the fireworks on the Mall. Instead we hunkered down with board games – you know they’re that much better when you have a group – and settled in on the sofa in the AC for the show.

Trust me. I never thought the day would come where I would forgo the Mall and the spectacular show. But when it was still 95 degrees at 9 pm, I learned there is a moment. Here’s to hoping next year is much more bearable. I’m not asking much maybe 89 degrees at 9 pm.

Hope you had a fun and safe July 4!

Book Review: Once Upon A Secret

With all the heat in the nation's capital lately, I just haven't felt like venturing out and about. And the latest book I wrapped up was such a quick easy read, I struggled to put it down for too long. Now let's be honest, who doesn't want the sordid details about a presidential affair?

Always in search of a good book, I often read the book review sections of newspapers as well as many "must read" lists that I stumble upon. Once Upon a Secret: My Affair with President John F. Kennedy and Its Aftermath was discovered as a result of one of those lists. As I mentioned the book is a quick read, written in a rather plain and simple style. It occurs to me now that the style of writing really set the tone for the book even without realizing it immediately.

The author, Mimi Alford, had an affair with President Kennedy while serving as a White House Intern at age 19. She held onto this secret for nearly 50 years before writing her story. She struck me as a very naive and almost blissfully ignorant girl. And for that matter, I don't believe she has really grown beyond that today. She shares the details of how she ended up in bed with the president on her fourth day in the White House and how it continued for the next 18 months. What I found interesting was her sense of loyalty to JFK even after all the years following his death. However, what I didn't understand was why. She shares a little insight into this, but I finished the book feeling pity for her. Ultimately, I just didn't find the writing to be that strong or the story that good.

However, there's still plenty of time this summer for a book by the pool or on the beach and this book fits the bill. If you're looking for a little more about the story itself, I'd recommend checking out the New York Times review.

So, have you read anything good lately? I'm making progress on the stack next to the bed. So much so, that I'm ready to acquire a few new additions.

Feel the burn

By no means am I in amazing shape. I’m afraid that ship has sailed, but I have dreams. Well, remember that barre class?

I was pretty excited about the class considering it incorporated ballet and that had been a part of my life for over 10 years. I had high hopes of it being just what I needed to jumpstart the exercise regimen I continue to procrastinate.

BikerBarre - A spin & barre studio

The studio was fresh and modern with warm, friendly staff. So far, so good. We’re instructed to leave our shoes and bags in a cubby upstairs and then grab our weights – one lighter and one heavier pair along with a mat.

The first third of the class was awesome. The focus was on arm strengthening exercises. In fact, the weights may have even been too light. Yeah, I said that. It then transitioned to the barre work for legs and that’s where it all went down hill. Pile' after pile' had my quads on fire. And all the while the teacher was all happy pushing you to go more. Of course, she was happy she was walking around the room correcting form. The rest of the class was a bit of a blur for me as I was distracted by the raging fire taking place in my thighs, so I'm of little help in providing feedback.

The class was an hour and definitely had my heart rate up. I’m thinking had I not had a session with a personal trainer that decided squats and lunges of all types were necessary the day before I might have felt better. Just to confirm this theory I’ve signed up for another class this coming Saturday.

Hello, weekend

Do you find short workweeks more exhausting than a full one? Maybe it’s just me. I feel like we’ve tried to fit in as much as possible this week, but then that did help it pass quickly and bring us to the weekend.

What plans await you this weekend?

Saturday appears to be the busy day for us. Keith has plans to play a round at the Renditions Golf Course with some buddies. I think he feels like a pro for a few moments. That is until he snaps back to reality as he’s searching for his ball in the woods.

I’m kicking myself now, but I signed up for a barre class at the new Biker Barre on the Hill. Fingers crossed that I fall in love with this style of strength training and work myself back into some pants. (If you’ve taken such a class and have tips for survival, I would love to hear from you.) After all the hard work, I’m rewarding myself with a mani/pedi using one of the new Essie polishes.

The night wraps up with dinner at Art and Soul. Their fried chicken equals bites of heaven. Guess that’s why I’ll be working out in the morning. I really need to work on more than maintaining.

Who knows what Sunday will bring, but I’m sure it will involve some sort of lazy breakfast.  If only it could be spent with a book and a hammock like this. Enjoy your weekend!

Al dente

Whenever Keith asks where I want to eat if we go out for dinner, I first answer with Mexican. You can’t go wrong with tacos, guacamole, and margaritas, right?

Perhaps, I’ve gravitated more towards the Mexican because I know Keith can seldom find anything wrong with that choice. But my first love is Italian. Plates of antipasti, good olive oil and warm bread, and chewy delicious fresh made pasta – I’m making myself hungry just thinking about it.

I’ve watched them make pasta on the cooking shows and thought, I could do that. Really how hard can it be? Well, last night I took a pasta making class at one of my favorite little stores on Capitol Hill - Hill's Kitchen. (If you live in DC, like to cook or just like kitchen gadgets, then you definitely need to stop by and check this place out.) This class fills quickly so it’s taken me almost a year to finally make it.

I found the instructor knowledgeable and friendly. The class was hands-on, so my only picture is of the finished product.

For some reason, I thought there was olive oil involved. I was surprised to learn fresh pasta involves just flour, eggs, and salt. And it didn’t come as a surprise when we were reminded to use the best quality ingredients possible. As to it being just three ingredients, I still some how I managed to get flour and egg all over the place making it difficult to get other photos.

The class ran much longer than I anticipated, but then rolling pasta is hard work. Tonight I’m envisioning plates of pasta with fresh tomatoes and basil for dinner; I want to savor my hard work. Fingers crossed it turned out okay. Now the bigger question is do I buy a pasta roller?

Do you make pasta from scratch or perhaps you make pizza dough? I’d like to hear what you find to be worth that extra energy.
